This Khutbah was given at the Colleyville Masjid Islamic Association of Mid Cities on June 24, 2016.

The Ayat of Surat Al-Baqarah related to Ramadan and fasting occur within a specific context. Nouman Ali Khan explains how the Quran, in its infinite wisdom, tackles the religious psychology of those who believe. It highlights diseases of the heart where some people are strict about observing rituals to the minutest detail, but are wholly corrupt when it comes to financial matters and other worldly dealings. It’s a kind of schizophrenia that we must seek to overcome in Ramadan because the tawqa (consciousness) of Allah must extend to all facets of one’s life. Ramadan must transform us not just spiritually, but ethically, otherwise what is the purpose of fasting from food when our hearts are afflicted with an insatiable hunger and greed for wealth?
