Weekly Economic Outlook: Andrew Hilton's take on geopolitics, the global economy, the travails of the UK, the intractability of inflation - and the gullibility of the crypto bros.

Why you should watch: The coming visit to Kyiv by Messrs Macron, Scholz and Draghi is the first bit of good news on the geopolitical front for a while - though there is still no sign that the US is willing to squeeze Zelensky into a compromise deal. As for the global economy, both the World Bank and OECD have hacked back their growth forecasts - and the UK has added to concerns about recession by announcing an unexpected fall in last month's GDP. Meanwhile, France's legislative elections are a nail-biter - though Macron is likely to get the majority he needs. What of Bitcoin (and the other cryptos) now that the myth of total anonymity has been shredded? A lot to chew on this week - none of it very encouraging.

Andrew Hilton is the former director of the CSFI. His background includes an MBA and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (which irritates Harvard by billing itself as the oldest university in America), five years in Washington, five years in Greece, and five years in New York. He has worked for the World Bank and the FT, and is now finding 'retirement' difficult.
