The Dark Ages was an interesting period of about six centuries that is largely lost to recorded history. Following the fall of Rome in 476 CE, the entire dynamic of Europe underwent a complete shift in power and culture. Under the Roman Empire, Europe was not quite as cohesive as people often think it was because many of its subjected peoples were allowed to keep their own cultures and beliefs. The important thing to the Romans was that the conquered countries of Europe submitted to Roman domination. As long as the people that the Romans were taking over agreed to be governed by Rome, their way of life was only marginally affected.

The Middle Ages is typically thought to have lasted about 1,000 years, but the Dark Ages is often considered to have ended around 1000 CE. By the time of the Renaissance, people had already become more enlightened, or at least the history was better recorded. Europe had begun to take shape into what it would eventually become, and the people were more interested in recording how that had happened. During the Dark Ages, Europe was still trying to figure out what it was and how it would survive the chaos after the fall of Rome instead of focusing on recording history.
