Back in early spring we began work designing and building a few ponds in a new area of forest garden. One of the ponds resembles a canal, being long and straight with steep sides.
Unfortunately the soil did not have enough clay and we couldn't compact the dam walls enough to hold water and the canal started leaking.
A solution was needed to keep water in the canal/pond and, while there are a few options like a plastic liner, we decided to experiment using bentonite clay. It didn't work out for us sadly and since making this film we have lined the canal with pond liner. However we can see that, used in the right pond construction, bentonite clay would work very well.
