How the famous Eames Lounge chair was designed and made.
The Eames Lounge by Herman Miller -
This is the one 'must have' chair for anyone serious about relaxing at home.

The Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman, officially titled Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671), were released in 1956 after years of development by designers Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company.

- First chair the Eames designed for a high-end market.
- Made of molded plywood and leather. The heritage of the chair
goes back to the molded plywood chairs pioneered by the Eames'
in the 1940s. Charles Eames said his goal for the chair was that it
be "a special refuge from the strains of modern living."

- Part of the permanent collection at MOMA - New York's Museum
of Modern Art.

- When it was first made Ray Eames remarked in a letter to Charles
that the chair looked "comfortable and un-designy" (sic). Charles's
vision was for a chair with "the warm, receptive look of a well-used
first baseman's mitt".

- The first Eames lounge chair and ottoman was made as a gift for
Billy Wilder, the director of "Some Like It Hot," "Irma La Douce," and
"Sunset Blvd."

- Made its public debut in 1956 on Arlene Francis's Home Show, a
predecessor of the NBC Today show. Commenting on the unique
design, Charles Eames told Francis, "We've never designed for a
fashion, and the Herman Miller furniture company has never, ever
requested that we do pieces for a market." During the interview, a
short film was shown in which a man--Charles described him as "a
typical Herman Miller employee"--assembled and disassembled the
lounge chair, showing how simple the design was.

- Since its introduction, the chair has been in continuous production
by Herman Miller in America. Later, Vitra began producing the chair
for the European market. Immediately following its release other
furniture companies began to copy the chair's design. Some copies
were direct knockoffs, while others were merely 'influenced' by the
design.

- Chair with Ottoman retail for $3,200 - $8,000 USD depending on the
selection of veneer and leather

- In America, the chair is hand-made in Kentwood and Grand Rapids
Michigan.
