Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that the federal government, in partnership with the government of Nunavut, will be cutting child care fees by about 50 per cent with the goal of reaching $10-a-day child care by March of 2024.

Nunavut becomes the 12th province or territory to join the Canada-wide early learning and child care system, with only Ontario not yet having signed a deal with Ottawa.

Trudeau made the announcement during a virtual call with Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok, Families Minister Karina Gould, Northern Affairs Minister Dan Vandal and Nunavut Education Minister Pamela Gross.

Trudeau also took questions on the escalating crisis in Ukraine.

After the U.S. ordered the families of its embassy workers in Ukraine to leave the country, Trudeau was asked Monday about Canadian diplomats and their families. "The safety of Canadian diplomats and their families is of course paramount," he said, but offered no indication they’d be pulling anyone from Ukraine.

Asked whether further support either financially or militarily will be sent to Ukraine, Trudeau said “we will continue to work closely with the government of Ukraine to ensure they get the support they need and I'm sure there will be more announcements to come.”
