They always say that no matter what walk of life you’re in, it’s best to leave them wanting more. Adhering to this philosophy that it’s better to depart before you outstay your welcome, there’s a reason why some bands and artists have all chosen to call it quits while the prospect of more music from them still invokes immense excitement. From The Smiths to The Talking Heads, there are plenty of legendary artists who’ve chosen to leave money on the table by not heeding the demand for new material or shows. Likewise, singer/songwriters like Billy Joel have held fast to the idea that their days of recording new music have elapsed as, in the famous New Yorker’s own words, "I didn't have the same motivation anymore. You need the inspiration to create good new music, and if you don't have it, don't bother"

Barring the likes of Andre 3000 and Joe Budden or someone like Rakim or Big Daddy Kane who have abstained from recording a major project for many years, letting go of the game of your own free will is something that plenty of hip-hop stars have struggled to comprehend. Or, at the very least, their definition of retirement has severely differed from that which can be found in the dictionary.

From Jay-Z’s famous fake-out that was more of a sabbatical than stepping away to modern-day artists like Logic and The Game who waved themselves off into the sunset only to retreat back within months or years, the fact that so many rappers have reneged on their apparent departures from the industry has meant that anytime a rapper says their time as an MC is running out, there’s an immediate skepticism from audiences.
