2022 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X vs 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road & TRD Pro
Comparison Visual Off-Road Driving, Exterior & Interior Design

The standard Frontier 310-horsepower 3.8-liter direct injection V6 engine, which was all-new with 93 percent new or redesigned parts, offers best-in-class horsepower. Torque is rated at 381 Nm.

Matched to the engine is a 9-speed automatic transmission designed to maximize efficiency and provide strong acceleration. The transmission offers quick, crisp and direct shift response throughout the entire gear range.

Tacoma's popular choice is the 3.5-liter V-6 making 278 hp and 360 Nm of torque with four-wheel drive. The V-6 takes either the automatic or a manual transmission.

The Frontier PRO 4X model adds an electronic locking differential, Bilstein off-road shock absorbers and underbody skid plates for the most fierce of off-road adventurers.

The Tacoma TRD Off Road and TRD Pro comes with Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, hill-descent control, and several terrain traction control modes.

The all-new Nissan Frontier brings the power, capability, utility, maneuverability and technology that drivers need to take on both weekday work and weekend adventures. The all-new Frontier design combines aggressive, modern style with elements inspired by the iconic Nissan Hardbody.

The third-generation Toyota Tacoma, America's best-selling mid-size pickup with a design inspired by Toyota's legendary desert race trucks, has muscular good looks, a well-earned reputation for off-road talent, veritably defines the "work hard, play hard" ethos.

Frontier features a powerful front end with a massive grille and chiseled hood, framed by new precision interlocking headlights. A wide, elevated stance and massive vertical fenders evoke durability and strength, accentuated by a high eye-point and high shoulder bodysides – where natural light and shadows meet.

In the rear, precision lighting features a machined, structural look, with the lamps appearing to clamp to the body sides. The muscular rear fenders combine with the rear bumper for an athletic, uncompromising stance.

And for an even more aggressive look, the specially-equipped 4 wheel drive Frontier PRO 4X and new 2 wheel drive Frontier PRO-X feature LED headlamps, LED Daytime Running Lights, LED fog lights and Lava Red grille accents.

Tacoma's front grille design with detailing tailored to each model grade:work-ready SR; high-style, high-value SR5; athletic TRD Sport; adventurous TRD Off-Road; ultimate off-road TRD Pro; and top-of-the-line Limited.

The Tacoma TRD Off-Road gets a new grille up front, LED foglamp, LED DRL headlamp availability, chrome insert taillamp and the addition of passenger Smart Key.

The Tacoma TRD Pro looks hard core, especially in its new Army Green color, with black trim and black 16-inch wheels. The TRD Pro also gets the new surround-view camera system with an additional camera underneath the truck to help see obstacles on the trail.

Designers gave the all-new interior of the new Frontier a feeling of protection and versatility with modern functionality.

Largest-in-class 9-inch color touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that are standard on all models. The new center stack is simplified and intuitive, allowing for a user-friendly experience for driver and passenger.

Further making life easier, a standard, largest-in-class 7 -inch Advanced Driver Assist Display offers configurable information directly in front of the driver.

Tacoma's dashboard is business-like, with big controls for climate and other functions. A new, larger multimedia touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The SR grade features a 7-inch touchscreen display, while all others get an 8-inch touchscreen. There's good storage throughout the cabin.

Addressing common customer needs, Frontier provides 4 liters of center console storage – almost double that of most mid-size pickups – as well as 5.7 liters of rear-door-pocket storage and 6.5 liters of front-door-pocket storage. Storage is also provided at the top of the instrument panel.

Added insulation, improved rear carpet structure and new front-door acoustic laminated glass all reduce interior road noise. Standard Zero Gravity seats provide initial softness with lateral support to help reduce long-range driving fatigue.
