In June of 2021, we embarked on what has been what has been our BIGGEST dream we’ve dreamed up in our 15 years of being together. We started building our future family home on 5 acres of land in the Hood Canal in Washington State.

Since June, we have been pushing HARD as we’ve built/installed our sill plates, floor joists, sub floor, log walls, supporting column, ridge beam, and roof rafters. Our goal has been to be dried in by the end of October (and yes, we are a little behind on getting our videos out to you in a timely manner) and over Labor Day weekend of 2021 we started our roof.

We opted to have 2 roofers help us with this portion of the build. As you know we’re both amateur builders and we are learning as we go. As we started this house build we were torn on if we’d hire a small roofing crew to help us or if we’d go at it alone. Well, as the time got closer, we started to realize that if we took on our roof build, it would take us FAR longer than it would take a small roofing crew to take on this job. And we knew that the closer we got to Fall, the more rain would be an issue and having a roof over our house was time sensitive. So we connected with two amazing guys, Kevin and Ruben to help us with our roofing project.

Now, don’t worry, we are both very active in this part of the build. We don’t just sit back and watch Kevin and Ruben do all the work. Nope! We hop in, too. We work hard to bring them their OSB sheets and shingles so we can complete this project in a timely manner.

Thank you so much Kevin and Ruben. You are both quick and efficient workers with an amazing work ethic, and we had a BLAST working with you. I’m not sure this house would have a roof without your help. :)

And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on YouTube. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 9 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.

In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the summer of 2022. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.

Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.
