Spend enough time around the railroad, and one will see people doing dumb things, such as playing on the tracks or risking their lives trying to beat the train to a grade crossing. In my hundreds (perhaps now thousands) of hours of both railfanning and working in the field for the industry, I have never witnessed such a close call - until now.

While shooting footage for an upcoming edition of the "Railroad Superhighway" series for this channel, a friend and I stood in shocked disbelief as this man came within 3 seconds of being blown up into a billion tiny indistinguishable bits of human goop by Amtrak #381 at Brookfield, Illinois.

Now just imagine how terrified the train's engineer had to have been!

Folks, the railroad maintains these grade crossing warning devices at THEIR expense for YOUR safety. Don't ignore them! This guy was lucky. Far too many have not been. Do not become a statistic!
