"It's About to Explode" New Images Show Betelgeuse Has Dimmed All the Way Down and Very Unstable. On March 14, 2024, the American Association of Variable Star Observers announced that Betelgeuse, the nearest red supergiant star to Earth in the constellation Orion, has dimmed by approximately 0.5 magnitude since late January.
This star is known for its variability, so changes in brightness are not uncommon.
However, the current dimming has brought Betelgeuse to a dimmer state than it has been in for several years.
This raises the question of whether we might witness another Great Dimming event like the one observed in 2019-2020.
And when Betelgeuse goes supernova, will this pose a danger to Earth?
