The Ronquières ship lift in the Wallonia region of Belgium makes it possible to overcome a difference in height of around 68 metres. The two two caissons, weighing 5,200 tons, travel up and down the 1.4 km long inclined plane on 236 wheels at a maximum speed of 1.2 m/s. The counterweight moves under the caissons. The lift has replaced 14 locks since 1968. The observation tower at the top is 150 meters high.
