The Electric Mini is a major launch for the Oxfordshire based company. All manufactures understand the importance of having a carbon neutral fleet leading because in the future combustion engines will not be produced. So to say this is crucial to the future of Mimi is not to overstate things.

The Electric MIni's architecture is a modified version of that found on all Minis. The batteries are positioned down the middle of the car using the existing transmission tunnel and behind the seats. Mini say that there is no intrusion on boot capacity.

The car does sit 15mm higher than the standard 3 door Mini hatch however from behind the wheel it feels compact and you seem to sit low. There is plenty of adjustment in the steering wheel and seat to allow pretty much anyone to get comfortable. The cabin is very similar to the regular car, the only real change being the replacement of the rev counter for an elliptical display showing the current speed and charge levels.

The start/stop switch remains on the lower section of the dash. Sport, Normal and Green are the main driving modes. Auto Express say in Sport it becomes obvious that you are driving an electric car, the near instant acceleration without gear changes being the most obvious clues.

The Electric motor produces 181bhp which propels it to 62mph in 7.3 seconds. Acceleration above this level is less pronounced but still significant. According to Auto Express 'There’s a hint of body roll through faster corners, enough to let you know the level of grip remaining at each corner. The steering is weighty and reacts immediately to inputs, giving the Electric a real sense of athleticism; it feels every bit like an electric hot hatch and by some margin the most entertaining, ‘affordable’ EV to drive'.

The MINI Electric is also a relative lightweight. The 32.5kWh battery adds around 130kg, total weight is claimed to be 1,350kg, which would make the car one of, if not the lightest electric cars on sale. So the Mini feels nimble and eager to change direction as you might expect to experience in the standard car as well as offering near instant acceleration.
