2019 has been a great and widely praised vintage for Austria. Although the 2020s will be exciting as well and represent a much cooler, fresher and spicier character, the 2019s have everything that a great vintage needs in order to age for decades: ripeness, intensity, drive and tension. For the first time in 20 years, I have often preferred the Veltliners to the Rieslings in 2019. Obviously, the warmth of the vintage was made for Veltliner. The wines are concentrated and rich, but they also have the vitality and mineral freshness that I have missed in so many warm vintages.
