In one of the most important and urgent interviews featured on MindHealth360, discover why our #mentalhealthcrisis concerns us collectively and why we need to attend to our planet, society and each other in order to heal ourselves. Daniel Schmachtenberger is one of the most brilliant and complex thinkers of our time. Combining astounding intellect and depth of knowledge with profound concern and wisdom, he is tackling the many issues that threaten us. Founder of the Civilisation Research Institution and founding member of The Consilience Project, in this interview he focuses on our mental health crisis. He explains why our world system is profoundly unhealthy and why poor mental health (anxiety, depression, addiction, body dysmorphia, suicidality, etc) is linked to our collective (rather than individual) trauma. In this deeply thought-provoking conversation, Daniel also outlines what we can do collectively to restore our individual well-being and rediscover the true meaning of life.

The modern world enables us a species to easily shy away from painful feelings and experiences (such as grief, death, feeling devastated about the harsh realities of our world; child labour, climate change, decay of coral reefs, etc). The truth is, while significant experiences may inspire feelings that make us want to make change (i.e by spending more time with loved ones, by doing ‘something’ about the catastrophes of climate change, war, poor mental health, etc) these feelings often only last for a short while. Our psycho-social environment modifies and desensitises us. Our busy lives and jobs don’t care about the content of our distress or our emotional turmoil, while tech and screens play a significant role in limiting our attention span to the true substance of life, including its pain.

If we want to shift how we operate as individuals, we need to open time for meaningful awareness. This may deepen our pain and tragedy, but it will also deepen our feelings of love, beauty and meaning. But how can we achieve this continually, rather than as a reaction that tends to operate only in the short term? We can avoid becoming desensitised by seeking methods that continually encourage depth of feeling and awareness. It used to be church. Now we need to look for #community. Surrounding ourselves with people who already are deep and meaningful in thought and feeling will inspire depth and awareness to flourish—and remain constant—in ourselves. This will make a tangible difference to tackling greater change individually, collectively and on planetary levels.
