If you want to grow your own garlic at home, you'll first need to figure out what type of garlic to order and plant. Depending on where you're located, you'll either be able to plant hardneck garlic, softneck garlic, or both. And each category of garlic has its own benefits like storage time, scapes, and clove size.

Here in zone 8, we're lucky enough to be able to grow both hardneck and softneck garlic varieties.
