Mercedes-AMG has reinvented the hot rod with the all-new 2024 C63 S E Performance. This plug-in hybrid monster packs an immense 671 horsepower and 752 lb-ft of torque from a complex powertrain that combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a potent electric drive system. It's the most powerful C-Class ever and one of the quickest cars on the road today.

Under the hood is a dizzying array of components working in concert. The turbocharged 2.0-liter makes 469 hp on its own, but it's augmented by an electric motor integrated into the turbocharger housing itself. A more powerful electric motor drives the rear axle through a two-speed transmission, while a third motor assists the front axle. Despite this engineering madness, it all works with impressive refinement.

Power delivery is shockingly linear for such a complex system. Mercedes says the C63 will hit 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, with the quarter-mile passing in 11.2 seconds at 121 mph. In real-world acceleration testing, the numbers absolutely back up Mercedes' claims - this C63 is savagely quick. The 9-speed transmission swaps gears seamlessly and the electric motors provide an endless wave of torque at any speed.

The bone-stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires struggle for traction under the onslaught of power. With so much shove available instantly, it's easy to light up the rear tires even with all-wheel drive maximizing grip. Placing the drive mode into its angriest Race setting sends all output to the rear wheels, making smoky burnouts and drifts a distinct possibility if you're brave enough.

For normal driving, the C63's selectable modes provide a incredible breadth of personality. In its softest Comfort mode, it wafts along electrically with exceptional manners. Once underway, the gasoline engine can turn itself on and off entirely free of shudder or vibration. Sport and Sport+ modes amplify the exhaust noise and firm up the suspension without feeling overly harsh. Only maxed-out Race mode feels a bit too stiffly sprung on less-than-perfect pavement.

Inside, AMG has provided a dizzying array of displays and adjustments to tweak every aspect of the C63's complex powertrain. Multiple screens show temperatures, power outputs, and live torque figures from each individual motor and engine. It's the kind of tech overload that engineers will drool over, but the common motorist may find overwhelming. At least the seats provide sublime long-distance comfort and support.

With expected pricing around $100,000, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance won't come cheap. But both at the pump and at the track, it delivers a level of performance that borders on the unbelievable for such a compact sedan package. Mercedes has taken the performance car into uncharted territory of excessive complexity and gadgetry, but the stunning results undoubtedly justify the means. This is the future of hot rodding whether you're ready or not.
