The Aleutian Islands are a chain of 14 large volcanic islands. Research suggests that a giant volcano may be hidden beneath the waters surrounding Aleutian Islands. A small group of 4 volcanic islands in Aleutian chain might be part of a single undiscovered giant volcano. There may be a 12-mile wide caldera in hundreds of feet beneath the surface of Pacific waters

Calderas are formed when a massive reservoir of magma suddenly empties and the overlying ground collapses. Caldera-forming eruptions are the most explosive volcanic eruptions and they often cause global effects. The eruption of nearby Okmok volcano in 43 BCE led to famine and influenced the fall of Roman Republic

If researchers’ suspicions are correct. The proposed volcanic caldera would be in the same category of volcanoes that are capable of super-eruptions. The existence of this massive caldera is not yet proven. But the research can also help us understand future eruptions and prepare for their hazards
