Formula 1 points system: a look at the real reasons for an anachronistic change

Recently, the F1 Commission convened following the conclusion of the Chinese Grand Prix, marking the fifth round of the 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship. The primary topic of discussion was the proposed modification of the existing regulations governing points allocation during Formula 1 race weekends. Over the years, these rules have undergone multiple revisions, expanding the scope of positions eligible for valuable points and mirroring aspects seen in MotoGP.

In the past, achieving a points finish was a significant achievement, with points awarded solely to the top six finishers, without any additional recognition for setting the fastest lap.

This era was characterized by every milestone, including merely crossing the finish line, being a notable accomplishment. The championship boasted a higher number of competing teams, with a substantial gap between the leading teams and the rest. Modern Formula 1 has become a tightly controlled competition, with any interest from new entrants viewed as a threat by the existing teams. This unwelcome risk jeopardizes the economic equilibrium established by the current ten teams through the distribution of revenues managed by Formula One Management.

Furthermore, car reliability has reached levels akin to those seen in endurance racing, with technical failures becoming increasingly rare, even for teams towards the rear of the grid.

Despite varying performance levels across the grid, it's uncommon for a car to be lapped by the race leader at the end of a Grand Prix. Given this context, awarding points to a larger number of cars and drivers completing the race borders on anachronistic. The proposal suggests extending points allocation up to the twelfth position, considering the twenty cars entered in the championship. Should all Formula 1 cars finish the race, practically 60% of them would secure points.
