Angiography is a medical imaging technique that involves visualising blood vessels in the body using contrast media and X-rays to diagnose abnormalities or diseases within the vascular system. It helps detect blockages, aneurysms, narrowing, or other irregularities within arteries or veins. Dr Akhlaque Ahmed, Consultant, Interventional Cardiology, Narayana Hospital - Brahmananda, Jamshedpur, explains the different aspects of Angiography.

Different Ways of Angiography

Angiography can be performed through different access points, with two common methods being radial and femoral:

Radial Angiography. In this approach, the catheter is inserted through the radial artery in the wrist. It offers advantages such as reduced risk of complications like bleeding and improved patient comfort due to the smaller size of the radial artery than the femoral artery.

Femoral Angiography. The catheter is inserted through the femoral artery in the groyne area. While it provides direct access to larger vessels, femoral Angiography carries a higher risk of complications such as bleeding and pseudoaneurysm formation. It may require longer periods of immobilisation post-procedure.

Conducting Angiography with CT Scan
Angiography uses contrast media and X-rays to visualise blood vessels directly, while a CT scan provides detailed cross-sectional images of the body's internal structures. However, CT angiography (CTA) can also be conducted, which combines CT scanning with contrast material to produce detailed images of blood vessels.

Angiography is an important diagnostic tool in modern medicine. It enables precise visualisation of the vascular system to detect and evaluate various conditions affecting blood vessels.
