When INEOS unveiled their LEQ12 test platform for the 37th America's Cup, the novel sensor laden tow mast went unnoticed by most. However the significance wasn't lost on the other |Cup teams. A tow mast allowed INEOS to circumvent some of the tank testing rules and collect data on their platform without the variable of raising sails.

Yet just two weeks later a rule enquiry threw the legality of the such a mast in to question. Crucially the LEQ12 are only allowed one 'mast tube'. It seems to be the opinion of the majority of the AC teams and the Rules Committee that this one mast can either be a tow mast, or a sailing mast, but INEOS can't have both.
