Expensive lenses with wider apertures and better optical quality are usually required to achieve a shallower depth of field and smoother background blur.

Blurring the background is crucial to focus on the subject, separating it from the surrounding elements and reducing distractions. However, if your photo lacks depth and dimension, you can create a more three-dimensional effect by isolating the subject and blurring the background in post-processing.

In this photoshop tutorial, we will use the power of Photoshop AI to easily and quickly achieve a professional background blur. To get started, make sure you have Photoshop Beta installed. Begin by separating the background from the subject using the Lasso tool. Draw a rough selection around the subject, aiming for a general outline.

With the rough selection in place, click on "Generative Fill" in the taskbar. This AI-powered feature intelligently removes the subject from the background and replaces it with a separate layer. After generating the options, choose the desired variation, delete the layer mask, and fill in the blank areas.

Next, duplicate the background layer, merge it with the generative layer, and rename it "background." Select the original background, click on "Select Subject," and select the new background layer's layer mask thumbnail. Fade the background into a dreamy blur using the "Lens Blur" filter under the "Filter" menu.

If desired, repeat the lens blur process for a smoother background. The background blur highlights the subject and eliminates distractions, perfect for emphasizing details in portraits. Use a soft brush to add back any missed details by painting with black color.
