The 2024 BMW i4 is an all-electric performance sedan that brings the driving thrills you'd expect from an M car but with the silent, instant torque of an EV powertrain. While BMW purists may scoff at the idea of the legendary M badge adorning an electron-powered vehicle, the i4 M50 makes a strong case that the future of performance driving could be electric.

Under the skin, the i4 M50 packs a potent dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing a stout 536 horsepower and 586 lb-ft of torque. That's enough grunt to slingshot this 5,063-pound Bimmer to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. For context, that's quicker than the current M3 Competition xDrive's 3.4-second sprint. The M50 has the pace to back up its racy looks and badging.

Backing up that explosive acceleration is a well-sorted chassis with the balanced handling you'd expect from an M product. The i4 M50 pulls an impressive 0.97g on the skidpad and stops from 70 mph in just 154 feet. BMW's engineers have worked wonders tuning the M50's adjustable air suspension and rear-axle steering to provide sharp, agile cornering capabilities without sacrificing ride quality.

But the i4 isn't a one-trick performance pony. The more mainstream xDrive40 model tested here as a long-termer boasts a still-potent 396 hp while delivering over 300 miles of EPA-rated range on a charge. That makes it a well-rounded daily driver with a surprising turn of speed when called upon. We've been averaging around 71 MPGe over thousands of miles, which falls well short of the EPA's 99 MPGe combined estimate but is still very efficient.

Inside, the i4 showcases the latest tech from BMW including the seamless curved display housing the infotainment and digital instrument cluster. The iDrive 8.5 operating system is among the most intuitive in the biz, blending touchscreen, voice, and physical controls effectively. Material quality is up to BMW's typical high standards too.

There are a few i4 downsides worth mentioning. Its lifeless steering feel is a letdown in what is meant to be an engaging driver's car. And while quick, the artificial noise pumped into the M50's cabin in Sport mode is just plain weird and inconsistent with BMW's typical understated attitude. Some ranges will also take issue with the fairly steep $70,695 asking price for a loaded M50.

Overall though, the 2024 i4 is an extremely compelling addition to BMW's electric lineup. It retains the performance pedigree you'd expect from the roundel brand while wrapping it in a fittingly high-tech, eco-friendly package. For those seeking an engaging electric driving experience without sacrificing everyday usability, the i4 is a grand slam.
