Harriet Tubman was a soldier, freedom fighter, Underground Railroad conductor, nurse, and spy, and staunch advocate for African American rights. Yet, her most important role was that of a fierce advocate, defender, protector, and supporter of African American rights.

In her presentation, Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander will explore the life of this woman whose journeys took her from Maryland to Philadelphia, PA, Auburn, NY, St. Catherine's, Canada, and Hampton, VA, where Tubman served as the head matron in the Colored Hospital at Fort Monroe.

This presentation was part of the Hampton History Museum's Port Hampton Culture Series and was recorded on March 4, 2024.

The Hampton History Museum is located at 120 Old Hampton Lane in Downtown Hampton. For more information visit www.hamptonhistorymuseum.org/https://hampton.gov/4075/Hampton-History-Museum
