This was the scripted ending of the film. The execution would have happened in a similar way, but without the closure of everyone being 'tricked' by The Puppetman, holding the reveal until months later and indicating that both Al and Ruby are in process of trying to eliminate the threat on their own.

When we were in production, we filmed this before the climax in the prison - and the idea of the 4th wall breaking smile seemed like a much more economical way of telling the same story.
