🐋WHAT IS A WHALE'S FLUKE?

Whale flukes are the whale tail fins; the two lobes on the left and right on the whale's tail. So next time someone asks you, "What is a fluke on a whale?" you will know. By the way, this whale fluke definition has another side to it. On the one hand, it's the actual whale tail. On the other hand, it also describes whale fluking.

🐋WHAT IS WHALE FLUKING?

Whale fluking is when whales lift their tails before diving. The Humpback whale tail flukes can be 18 feet wide (that's both sides of the tail together). So if you watch a whale fluke, this is what you saw.

One of the highlights on any whale watching trip is to see a whale fluke. The higher it lifts it's tail, the more spectacular the scene is. When a whale flukes, it is a spectacular sight to watch, especially with a high tail lift (a high fluking dive).

🐋HIGHS AND LOWS

High fluking dives happen when the whale lifts it's tail flukes into a vertical position before diving. This puts the whale into a better position for a deep dive.

Low fluking dives happen when the whale is only making a shallow dive staying closer to the ocean surface.

Before diving, the whale will round out it's body with the upper back and dorsal fin clearly visible (humped) before diving. This is best seen when a humpback whale flukes.
