Spartacus the swan rescued by volunteers from the charity Wildlife in Need is back on the water six weeks after nearly being killed when a motorist ran over both his feet.

The wild mute swan had to have a toe amputated and reconstructive surgery following the incident in a flooded car park next to a river.

In all, Spartacus had £1,000 of treatment that involved 10 trips to the vets.

As well as two lots of surgery he had to have antibiotics and his bandages changed twice a week, each time having to be anaesthetised.

The bird has since made a full recovery and has been released back onto the River Stour at Christchurch, Dorset.
