May Allah protect us — but if we or a family member got caught in a crime, would we try to cover it up? Or would we seek and apply justice, even if it’s against ourselves and our loved ones?

During the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, there was a lady from a prestigious family who committed a serious theft. She eventually got caught, but when her family found out about it, they didn’t want for the law of Allah to be applied onto her (i.e. the cutting of hand). So they asked Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) to intercede for her with the Prophet ﷺ.

However, when Usama met the Prophet ﷺ and interceded on their behalf, the colour of the Prophet’s ﷺ face changed. He ﷺ became very upset! The Prophet ﷺ asked: “Do you intercede with me so that the legal punishment prescribed by Allah is not applied in this matter?” Hearing this, Usama appealed the Prophet ﷺ to ask for Allah’s forgiveness for his mistake.

Later in the afternoon, the Prophet ﷺ gave a public sermon to all. After he praised Allah, the Prophet ﷺ said:

🔵 ❛The nations before you were destroyed because if a noble (i.e. the rich and elite) amongst them stole, they would let go of him; but if a poor person amongst them stole, they inflicted the prescribed punishment upon him. By Him in Whose Hand Muhammad's soul is, if Fatima — the daughter of Muhammad — stole, I would cut her hand.❜ [Sahih al-Bukhari 4304]

🔵 And Allah says: ❛O believers! Stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or close relatives. Be they rich or poor, Allah is best to ensure their interests. So do not let your desires cause you to deviate ˹from justice˺. If you distort the testimony or refuse to give it, then ˹know that˺ Allah is certainly All-Aware of what you do.❜ [Surah an-Nisa’ 4 : 135]

The Prophet ﷺ truly lived by the Qur’an, and so too must we. It’s tough facing the repercussions of one’s action. But remember that the consequences in the hereafter are more severe than in this world. We ask Allah for His Protection, as well as the courage to stand up for justice, even if it were against ourselves and our loved ones.
