As Volvo prepares for an all-electric future, they are doing so in phases. The first phase included plug-in hybrid models throughout the lineup, next all Volvos will eventually be at least a mild hybrid, and coming soon there will be EV versions of everything.

The current generation Volvo S90 dates back to 2015. With the help of the XC90, it successfully pulled the luxury brand out of irrelevance and paved the way for other successful models in its lineup, such as the XC60 and XC40. Having only received low-profile refreshes over the last seven years, it is still an elegant and sophisticated option in the luxury sedan segment.

For 2022, the “T#” branded engines are gone, replaced by the B6 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder mild hybrid that includes an additional 48 volt lithium-ion battery and an electric supercharger. Horsepower is down (295), but torque (310) and fuel economy (26 combined) both see a boost. The S90 Recharge is still available if you are looking for a plug-in hybrid, but it still retains the belt-drive supercharger.

Inside, the S90 also receives the Android Automotive user interface first seen in the XC40 Recharge. It does a good job at integrating the Google Assistant and excellent Google Maps into the UI, but does have a few teething problems that I will discuss in the video.
