With over 20 hours of sunlight in some parts of the year, the fasting day -- which begins at dawn and ends at sunset -- can be incredibly long for Muslims living in the far north. It can also be incredibly short at other times. Dr. Shabir Ally says Muslims in Nunavut and other cities near the Arctic can align their fasting day with Mecca, so that they're fasting approximately 12 hours a day.
