This excerpt from our video on Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh describes the revolutionary school system he experienced in his youth- the Schule Schloss Salem boarding school, developed by progressive Jewish Headmaster Kurt Hahn. The School was originally founded in Germany under the Margrave of Baden- Prince Max von Baden, but after the onset of the Nazi regime, Hahn and his entire school program fled to Britain, where it was given a new home at Gordonstoun in Scotland. Hahn's program of personal development went beyond the basic arts and sciences, to develop the character of its students and would have a massive influence on the philosophy and philanthropic work of Philip when he married into the Royal family; particularly in his attempts to widen the program to all pupils under the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme throughout all the Commonwealth countries.
