How much bigger is the Model Y than the Model 3? Hey everyone thanks for tuning in, Im JP and today we are going to compare all of the exterior and interior dimensions of the Model 3 and the Model Y. There have been so many questions being asked about the exterior and interior dimensions and today we are going to break them all down and declare a winner. I hope!
So now that the Model Y has finally been delivered and we now have access to the true exterior and interior dimensions, we are going to break them down in detail to help clear up any confusion and hopefully help those that are on the fence make an informed decision on which vehicle may suite them best! Lets dive in and take a look at the exterior dimensions of both Vehicles…
So as mentioned you can see the two cars are extremely close to one another in size from an exterior perspective, with just a few dimensions that really separate the two vehicles. Lets take a quick look at those specific differences.
We have The Height of the Model Y which is a huge difference and sits about 7” taller than the model 3.
Then we have the Width of the Model Y which is almost 3” wider than the Model 3 and of course we have the Ground clearance of the Model Y which sits slightly more than an inch taller than the Model 3 not an extreme difference but you can certainly tell by looking at both vehicles side by side. So from an exterior perspective that’s really about it, yes there are a few other variances but they are so closet one another I don’t think that they are that noticeably different.
To round this up the most noticeable exterior differences is the height, width and ground clearance of the Model Y compared to the Model 3. What are your thoughts on the exterior differences? Alright now lets look at the Interior Differences Of the Model Y and the Model 3
WOW, so as you can see the Model Y and Model 3 are extremely close in just about every category, now remember that the Model Y is based on about 75% of the Model 3 so one would expect that these dimensions would be very similar. Lets take a quick look at the major difference of the interior….
The rear leg room really stands out in the Model Y which is about 5” larger than the model 3, but the Model Y has less leg room in the front and is about an inch shorter compared to the Model 3, is it a big deal?
Now I think the Model Y gained the leg room in the rear due to the way that the doors sit further back and are cut more straight which allows those seats to sit further back in the Model Y. While the headroom is nearly the same between the two vehicles I believe the beautiful all glass roof in the Model Y gives the perception that it is much larger. Another noticeable difference in favor of the model 3 is the HIP room in the rear which is almost two inches larger than the Model Y. We also see that the Model Y seat height from the ground is also pretty significant, sitting at 4” higher than the Model 3, which should make getting in and out of the vehicle fairly easy. So from an interior perspective that’s really about it, yes there are a few other variances but again they are so close one another I don’t think that they are that noticeably different.
So let's wrap this and put this all into perspective, In my opinion the most noticeable difference between the Model Y and the Model 3’s exterior are the height, width and ground clearance which are all in favor of the Model Y. The most noticeable differences between the Model Y and the Model 3’s interior is the Rear Leg room, seat Height and headroom in the rear which again favor the Model Y, by a very slight margin I don’t want to leave out the Mode 3, as some dimensions are actually larger than the Model Y in some categories but gain by a very slim margin… The Model 3 has more leg room upfront, nearly the same head room in the front and rear and also has more hip room in the rear.
