Co-owner of Mr. Electric in Texas, Lara Bruhn is joined by John Lincoln, CEO of Ignite Visibility. In this exclusive interview, John and Lara discuss her career path, and how it led to starting and marketing a franchise! Let's dive into it.

(01:45) Lara's Marketing Start
Lara dives into her experience getting an MBA at Harvard, as someone eager to learn the ins and outs of a business degree, without any prior knowledge. Lara spent time after her MBA working a corporate job, but once she began a family she pivoted to teaching. Her role as an undergraduate marketing teacher allowed her to take a step back and revisit the original principles of marketing that she learned

(05:43) Acquiring A Franchise
Lara and her husband had wanted to own a business, and they came across Mr. Electirc, a company that checked all the boxes of a business they wanted to invest in. Lara came into the franchise with a big challenge - making sure the current employees knew that as the new owner, she was motivated to help grow each person individually, to ensure business growth. When coming into a new business it's essential to be a strong leader, so Lara worked on that

(09:57) Managing Multiple Franchises
Another challenge Lara navigated was managing two separate locations of a franchise. She discusses the parts of the two businesses she's integrated, such as answering the calls and doing the permit work. She discusses the importance of clear communication throughout the business, and then how essential it is to understanding each target demographic. Finally, she discusses her personal opinions on how to continue to grow her business.

(16:37) Finding A Compatible Role as a Franchise Owner
Lara notes the importance of understanding your own personality when it comes to deciding whether or not you want to own a business - it's not for everyone. She also stresses the importance of understanding what it truly means to invest money and time in a business, and maybe not see success right away. She knows her strengths are in math and marketing, so it makes sense for her to be in charge of both finance and marketing at Mr. Electric. The two are super important and she explains how hard it is to convey what services the company offers, how much they can charge, and how much value they can truly provide. With successful marketing comes healthy

(20:07) The Challenge of Safety - Electric Work
Lara is passionate about safety, but also about helping people. In the electric business, she leverages the safety angle to point out how little people actually know about their houses, and in turn, how important the services her team can offer to protect the people who live there, as well as the items in the home as general.

(24:40) Challenges Moving into 2024
Lara's biggest challenge for 2024 in running her franchise is to grow the company's market share. She wants to be the go-to source in the market. By focusing on where to invest her time and resources, she can train up her teams, beef up the career path for her employees, and grow market share.
