A record amount of sewage is being discharged into rivers and seas around England. A new report revealed that in 2023 private water companies discharged raw sewage for more than 3.6 million hours - a 105% increase on the previous 12 months.

At the same time, Thames Water, Britain’s biggest water company, is at risk of insolvency.

Anoosh Chakelian is joined on the New Statesman podcast by Will Dunn and Rachel Cunliffe to explore the economic and political reasons behind this "sh*tstorm".
