Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh addressed the Plenary on the theme “Parliamentary diplomacy: Building bridges for peace and understanding” at the 148th Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in International Geneva.

Shri Harivansh expresses concern over the several transnational & complex challenges being faced by the world today;

Parliamentary diplomacy offers one more avenue for fostering collaboration, dialogue and peace among nations, says Harivansh;

Parliamentarians are uniquely positioned to influence government as well as the public opinion;

Shri Harivansh says, as the 'Mother of Democracy', deliberative and advisory bodies have worked in India since ancient times;

'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (वसुधैव कुटुंबकम्) i.e. one earth, one family, a core value of Indian civilization, say Harivansh;

India has successfully brought the weight of the Global South to G20 which, in turn bridged the divide at the New Delhi Summit.

An Indian Parliamentary Delegation being led by Shri Harivansh, Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha is presently attending the 148th Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Delegation is comprised of five members from Rajya Sabha , namely ,Shri S. Niranjan Reddy, Shri Sujeet Kumar, Dr. Ashok Mittal, Dr. Prashanta Nanda and Smt. Sumitra.

Shri Harivansh participated in the Debate of the General Assembly on the topic titled ‘Parliamentary Diplomacy: Building Bridges for peace and understanding’. During the debate Shri Harivansh expressed concern over the several transnational & complex challenges being faced by the world today in this era of increasing interdependence and inter-connectedness. He stated that in such scenario, parliamentary diplomacy offers one more avenue for fostering collaboration, dialogue and peace among nations to harness the transformative power of parliamentary diplomacy to shape a more harmonious and peaceful world. He further said that members of Indian Parliament engaged, actively in various diplomatic activities have contributed to promoting global peace and prosperity by fostering dialogue and collaboration.

He underlined that Parliamentarians are uniquely positioned to influence government as well as the public opinion and Indian Parliament plays important role in shaping India's bilateral and multilateral relations, effectively. As the 'Mother of Democracy', deliberative and advisory bodies have worked in India since ancient times. The importance of Parliamentary diplomacy in promoting international peace can hardly be overemphasized.

'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (वसुधैव कुटुंबकम्) i.e. one earth, one family, a core value of Indian civilization which also happened to be the theme of India's G20 Presidency truly reflects the today’s theme of this debate i.e., building bridges for international peace, Shri Harivansh added.

While quoting the words of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi "A divided world cannot provide solutions to the major challenges facing humanity", Shri Harivansh said that the 9th P20 Summit hosted by India during its G20 Presidency underscored our commitment to shaping the global order through consensus and collaboration. As such India has successfully brought the weight of the Global South to G20 which, in turn bridged the divide at the New Delhi Summit.

Speaking about the unprecedented crises being encountered in recent years by multilateral cooperation, Shri Harivanch said that, this crisis has manifested in the form of fund cuts and ever-increasing policy paralysis in its Security Council and other institutions. The COVID-19 pandemic has also exposed vulnerabilities of the international system, particularly those of multilateral institutions.
