This is a clip from my 1991 documentary television series, Making Sense of the Sixties. Six hours of television that explored a variety of points of views toward the activities that took place during that time. It looked at several movements including the women's movement. Comments posted on previous clips of mine indicate that there are a variety of opinions about this today. Many women applaud it. Some do not. Some men do not. Some do. I lived through that time and am fortunate to have this footage and these interviews, which I recorded in 1989. the "movement" raised issues of women's place in society, women's rights, women's jobs and responsibilities as homemakers, wives, and mothers, women's jobs in the workplace, women's dress, women's speech, and so much more. They were all discussed and debated at that time. Try to watch it through to completion and see the amazing "consciousness raising group" seen shown in this clip. As a New York filmmaker in the early 1970s, I saw marriages break up because of the experiences women expressed to each other in those groups. Some marriages got better as well.
