As a positive reinforcement-based dog trainer, I use transfer of value in dog training when shaping amazing behaviors for dogs, including for a fantastic retrieve. But what if there does not seem to be anything a dog finds reinforcing in the first place? Enter Bella, a German Shepherd whose person wanted to train her to retrieve without using a force fetch. Now, Bella seemed only to have one thing she enjoyed, which was bubbles, so the first thing we did was create a transfer of value from bubbles to treats. This short case study video explains that transfer of value, and it’s something everyone can do.
