During WWII distressed bombers and fighters landed in Sweden. Sweden, being a neutral country, interned the crewmen. The US desired to repatriate the flies back to the US. The US proposed to gift Sweden fighters in trade for the internees. The US found the exchange terms distasteful and the Swedes found it repugnant. Nevertheless a deal was struck and the airmen were released in Oct, 1944. This video will track the paper trail of the negotiations.
