Our high school would 'reward' their good students with a free day of missing class and going to the beach. This is a big thing for us kids who didn't drive yet. So lunch choices had to be walking distance of Newport Beach and most students would grab a burger or pizza. But just walk a little bit and enjoy affordable seafood at the Crab Cooker. The cost now is still reasonable for a restaurant near the beach and Balboa Pier. Actually the ocean is on both sides of that street. (See map)

So they still have simple utensils, but they have improved the atmosphere in the place. So don't expect a fancy place, but it is enjoyable because of the staff, decor and tasty food.
