A hummingbird sleeping upside down (hanging) is in torpor but WHY do hummingbirds sleep upside down? Learn what torpor is.

One of the strangest things you'll ever see is a hummingbird sleeping upside down. It's literally hanging upside down on it's perch and not moving. But is it sleeping? Is it dead? Or is it something else like torpor or hibernation? Why do hummingbirds hand upside down like this? Well, it's actually in a state of torpor. These hummingbirds look like they are sleeping upside down but you could possibly say that they are closer to death than being alive because of the way they have slowed down their metabolism. Heart rate, Breathing and Body Temperature have almost ceased to function compared to the hummingbirds normal hyperactive state. The hummingbird is one of those animals which is heterothermic, it's a heterotherm and can regulate it's body temperature.
