Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening form of respiratory failure caused by severe lung injury and decreased oxygen supply. Despite supportive care measures, the mortality rates remain high, with survivors often experiencing long-term impairments. In a 2023 clinical update by the American Thoracic Society, an international and multidisciplinary team of researchers has collated emerging evidence on the management of patients with ARDS in the form of clinical practice guidelines.
