Automakers have traditionally reserved sub-brands -- or perhaps even marque-adjacent discrete brands -- for luxury and performance vehicles.

But in recent years, automakers have used sub brands for their electric models, shunting them off into specific parts of dealerships, their own sub web page, and sometimes, even their own dealerships.

Hyundai has become the latest to switch, announcing its future electric vehicles will be sold under the Hyundai IONIQ sub-brand.
