All New 2023 Dodge Challenger Hellcat SHOCKS The Entire Industry
The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the final resting place for tyres. It's one of the few coupes left with American-style V-8 power under the hood. The most conservative model in the Challenger SRT Hellcat line-up produces 717 horsepower from its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine. But there's more: the Hellcat Redeye model's version of this engine produces 797 horsepower. The Hellcat Redeye Widebody Jailbreak version, on the other hand, packs 807 horsepower. All Challenger SRT Hellcats come with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission; rear-wheel-drive is the only option and is always ready to discharge billows of smoke from each of its huge, 12-inch-wide rear tyres. While rivals like the Chevy Camaro ZL1 and Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 are more road-course friendly, the SRT Hellcat possesses drag strip energy. And plenty of it. The Challenger with all-wheel drive, V-6, and smaller V-8 engine is assessed individually.
What's New for 2023?
Dodge is gearing up for the final model year for the current generation Challenger SRT Hellcat by making the 807-hp Jailbreak package available on both the Redeye and non-Redeye variants. Under the hood of every 2023 Challenger will be a special "Last Call" plaque commemorating the final manufacturing run before Dodge transitions to a new generation of performance cars with electrified powertrains.
The Widebody variant looks better with its flared fenders and handles better, owing to wider wheels and tyres, so that's the one we'd go with. Despite the fact that the SRT Hellcat is all about excess, we wouldn't choose the Redeye model, which boosts power to over 800 horsepower. In fact, throughout our testing, the Redeye was slower than the ordinary Hellcat because its tyres simply couldn't handle the extra power.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Dodge's SRT laboratory did a Samuel L. Jackson and went full Old Testament with the powerful Hellcat engine. The stock arrangement produces "only" 717 horsepower, but the version in the Redeye produces 797. The 807-hp Super Stock variant has drag racing equipment. The latest Challenger SRT Redeye Widebody we tested reached 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and completed the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds at 125 mph when equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. We've driven multiple Hellcats and, as expected, we've never gotten weary of tapping into the seemingly limitless power source. But, firing the rogue beast straight and true requires great vehicle control. Every model had a sneaky growl at launch that progressed to a terrible howl when pushed hard. The distinctive supercharger howl of the Hellcat will send shivers down your spine from either dread or excitement—most likely both. These high-performance Challengers aren't the best equipment for a track-attack event, but they're swift in a straight line and handle well enough to go along twisting back roads—as long as your hefty right foot understands when to let off.
