“You are only as good as the people you dress.” – Halston

The last episode in series 4 of Fashion &… is a special extended episode dedicated to the man who propelled American fashion onto an International stage.

Roy Halston Frowick, known simply as Halston, shot to fame in 1961 when Jackie Kennedy wore one of his hats to her husband, John F. Kennedy’s presidential inauguration.

In the late 1960s, as hats were falling out of fashion, Halston expanded his creative output to include made to order and ready to wear and by the 1970s dressed the decades most stylish and influential women.

Hailed as "the premier fashion designer in America”, Halston defined iconic American style. He reinvented the jumpsuit, the shirtdress, and the classic caftan. Halston created minimalist silhouettes, devoid of superfluous trimmings, in a a simple colour palette.

His designs epitomised the hedonistic glamour, elegance and luxury of 1970s fashion. Halston pioneered the idea of the designer as stylist and promoted a unified aesthetic vision - he created a world for you to live in from caftans to couches.

America’s first fashion super star, a groundbreaking craftsman, a pioneering businessman and a genius of promotion as well as a compellingly glamorous man with handsome movie star looks.

Reaffirming his position as the man who defined an era , Women’s Wear Daily declared “The 1970s belong to Halston”.
