A Russian court has ordered American journalist Evan Gershkovich to remain in prison until at least late June. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reporter who is a US citizen was arrested almost a year ago on espionage charges. Both the newspaper and the US government say the charges were fabricated.

The US ambassador to Russia says no reason was given for extending Gershkovich's detention and no evidence of any crime was presented in court. US officials believe Gershkovich and other Americans held in Russia may be used as bargaining chips amid tensions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
