Tesla started building out a robust supercharger network about a decade ago. This charging network did not exist, and the only way Elon Musk saw any chance of EVs being successful was to have the supporting charging network.

Since that time, there have been tens of thousands of chargers installed across the globe. Tesla has single handedly made EVs a reality by building compelling cars, but also by building a reliable and expansive charging network.

All this time, other OEMs seemingly refused to invest in a robust charging network, with few exceptions like Rivian. Even then, no one has built anything close to the level of what Tesla has accomplished.

So if EVs suck, why are Teslas so popular? Well, it’s obvious the cars themselves coupled with a reliable and robust charging network are the game changer here.

Now, Tesla has aimed to open up a portion of their network to other EVs, which of course is met with differing opinions. Some argue it will only further crowd the network, while others say it’s the only way to make EVs viable.

After driving cross country in CCS vehicles, I have had the opportunity to witness and understand just how bad it is, even here this many years later. Not much has gotten better, and aging equipment is left to rot.

Now that Tesla has started to open up their network, it would seem that EVs may have a chance after all.

Let me know in the comments if you like or hate this move by Tesla.
