Kia’s success story in Europe is remarkable. The brand has gone from being a budget choice to a front runner which is capable of taking on the best – and winning. It’s not just the mainstream brands which have to worry, as Kia is pinching customers from the prestige German brands too, especially in the electric car markets.

The biggest test of Kia’s new premium status is the EV9 - a vast, seven-seater long range SUV that has Land Rover, Audi and Mercedes in its sights. Has the Korean brand built another winner, or is the concept of a £65,000 Kia a step too far?

The EV9 starts at £64,995 and that's for the 201bhp rear-wheel drive model in 'Air' trim. It gets features such as 19-inch wheels, roof rails, seven seats – with the fronts having electric adjustment, and the front and second row are heated and ventilated – a heated steering wheel, an electric tailgate and an electronic rear view mirror. GT-Line with all-wheel drive is priced from £73,245 and adds fancier LED headlights, 21-inch wheels, sportier body styling and 'premium relaxation seats', while top-spec GT Line S models start at £75,995. Six-seater versions are the priciest of the lot, starting at a whopping £76,995.

A 76.1kWh battery is offered exclusively with the Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) Standard model, but this won't be offered in the UK initially. We will instead get the 99.8-kWh battery in both the Long Range and All Wheel Drive variants. In terms of range, Kia claims a WLTP figure of 349 miles for the Long Range and 313 for the AWD.

The EV9 comes with standard Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, enabling the discharging of energy from the vehicle battery at up to 3.68 kW. Via the Kia Connect Store, customers will be able to add Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) compatibility to sell electricity back to the grid.

Efficiency will be an interesting one given the fact the EV9 weighs more than a Rolls Royce Cullinan, but we do know that it will have fast charging capability thanks to Kia’s 800 volt electrical system. This enables you to add around 60 miles of range into your battery in just six minutes using a super-fast 350 kW charger - usually found around the motorway network - making it easy to top up on longer journeys. If you’re charging at home, you can expect to take around 16 hours for a charge.
