Toyota might be synonymous with hybrid power, but Nissan hopes to change that with new petrol-electric models like the all-new Nissan X-TRAIL e-POWER.

Priced from $54,190 and available from early next year in two premium grades including the flagship Ti-L tested here, the innovative e-POWER variants will top the fourth-generation Nissan X-TRAIL line-up that arrives Down Under in December priced from $36,750.

It packs plenty of power and is smoother, quieter, more refined and just $4200 more expensive than equivalent petrol variants, but does e-POWER really provide the benefits of an electric car without needing to be plugged in?
