The inspiration behind this video:

Other Moana live-action remake news includes additions to the cast and crew, and Disney has found a director to tackle the story of a journey at sea. Thomas Kail will direct the Moana live-action remake for Disney. That name will sound familiar to Broadway fans as Kail directed the Hamilton stage adaptation filmed and released for Disney+. He was also the director for both the off-Broadway and Broadway stagings of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton and In The Heights. He also directed the Grease Live! adaptation for FOX, so Kail is a great choice, especially if fans want to see some interesting musical numbers at sea.

Since it’s a remake, the live-action Moana should retain most of the same characters. In the announcement, Johnson even name-drops Grandma Tala, Heihei, and of course Moana. The only confirmed actor so far is Johnson, who will be reprising his role as Maui. Some of the voice actors may have aged out of their roles by this point, so the production staff will need to find actors of Pacific Island descent who can both match the look and the singing capabilities to play the parts of Moana, Grandma Tala, Tui, Sina, and more. Auli'i Cravalho will not return as Moana but is going to be producing the movie alongside Johnson. She's also pledged to help find the next actor to play Moana, wanting to make sure Pacific Islander heritage is accurately reflected.
