The years of the Industrial Revolution are not clearly defined, but the period spanned both the American and French Revolutions, the expansion of empires into the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and the opening of the American West. It began in the 1700s with a shift in one of humanity’s oldest necessities, the need to make cloth to protect their bodies from the elements. The textile industry was the first to be mechanized, to create modern manufacturing and shipping methods, even the first to adopt supply-side engineering, though it wasn’t yet called that. Here is the story of the Industrial Revolution, described by some historians as “…the process of change from an agrarian and handicraft economy to one dominated by industry and machine manufacturing”.
